LINKS TO VIRTUAL MEETINGS IN "OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS" TAB
WE TALK BUT ARE WE BEING HEARD: WE HEAR BUT DO WE REALLY LISTEN?
Listening is a life long skill which effects all facets of our lives. With today's fast paced, over stimulated world our ability to listen, pay attention and retain information has decreased. Communication is the way we learn, and connect with others.
How to Practice Mindful Listening: HEAR
- HALT — Halt whatever you are doing and offer your full attention.
- ENJOY — Enjoy a breath as you choose to receive whatever is being communicated to you—wanted or unwanted.
- ASK — Ask yourself if you really know what they mean and if you don’t, ask for clarification. Instead of making assumptions, bring openness and curiosity to the interaction. You might be surprised at what you discover.
- REFLECT — Reflect back to them what you heard. This tells them that you were really listening.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention and being open to the present moment. Mindful listening then is about being fully present when interacting with others ( Rosenberg, M.B. (2015). )
